You can never quarentine the past!

The Onion AV Club has posted and new inventory article called The Criterion Collection of junk food: 19 snacks and sodas we wish were still on the market. It got me thinking about a lot of things that I remember that I can't find anymore. They mention several products that are near misses as far as I was concerned. Nutty Wheat Thins, whatever, I miss Big Wheat Thins. Sweet Baby Jays, those were good, but Jay Calypso Crunch is more sorely missed. They even bring up Holiday Spice Pepsi, that brew was horrible, but the Summer flavor Pepsi had out in '06 was damn tasty.

Before I run down some of my personal "I miss this junk food!" I feel the need to make comments about some of theirs.

4. Gatorgum
Dayv used to love this stuff. Gatorade Gum = Awesome! Now they say that it "available until the early ’80s" but that can't be right, we had it in the mid 90's. Was Peoria just special? Or did they have so much backlog that a lot of places still just had it around. Either way, it was delicious!

8. Hershey’s Cookies ’N’ Mint
Apparently this is brought back every now and again, except it's a much thicker bar. I think I'd pass it up as I just can't imagine it being as good as I thought they were back in the day. I would seriously eat 1 or 2 of these a week in high school.

10. Peanut Butter Boppers
This was my lunch time treat about once a week. They were fantastic, and I've yet to find any other type of peanut butter that comes close to that chalky, yet awesome consistency. I have to admit that if it wasn't for the ad I'm sure it would've been harder to place. Who are the ad wizards that came up with this one?

11. PB Max
Now this time I didn't even need the insanely memorable and prone to mentaly time traveling comercial to recall this tasty snack. PB Max was just fan-damn-tastic. These were a very rare treat. They may've been expensive or my parents didn't like them so they just didn't have them around much or something. I could eat a whole car full of these, in fact, this is the only thing on the list I'd rally for to bring back and I'd convince them not to change the very dated and rad packaging.

15. Ice Cream Cones Cereal
Another item on the list that I'd've never had if it not been for my little brother Dayv. I swear he more than likely ate this every morning for the entire production run. We had it so often that our mom collected the requisite number of UPC codes and sent away for 2 Ice Cream Cones Cereal watches for us. To this very day me and Dayv will talk about things eat that remind us of the vanilla flavored variety of this cereal.

17. Hydrox
I'm only commenting on this to point out how terrible Hydrox cookies are and no right thinking person should ever miss them. They are like reject Oreos even if they pre-date Oreos by a few years. You miss Hydrox? Let some Oreos get stale then dust them with some finely ground table salt. Boom, Hydrox! Or at least that's what I remember from the one time I had them.

18. Surge
I was always partial to Surge. It tasted good to me in the way that Mountain Dew tasted horrible to me. I remember sitting at the newly rebranded Carl's Jr. in East Peoria w/ Randy Toy waiting for our burgers and constantly refilling my cup with more and more Surge. I heard that Vault had a similar flavor, but with all the that caffeine and other energy drink-ness, well, I think I'm just too old for all that now.

19. Mr. Phipps Pretzel Chips
Until reading this I had no idea that Mr. Phipps Pretzel Chips had been discontinued. This is truly sad and I mourn their loss.

So what, junk foods and (mostly) drinks do you most miss Mr. Jose? Just keep reading and I'll tell you!

- Pineapple Upside Down Cake Jones Soda
Hands down, right after the Green Apple and the Vanilla Creme Sodas that Jones makes, this is the best thing they've ever came up with. I've had other pineapple sodas and they can't touch this! (I still have yet to try the Japanese pineapple soda Allison found for me though.) It was pineapple sweet and yet had something extra to it, maybe brown sugar or something. Dayv can also attest to it's awesomeness as I believe it was only he and I that drank ACME comics out of it's stock.

- Original recipe Mr. Pibb
I still can't believe they went and messed it up! I was a bit of a late adopter to Mr. Pibb, sure, it was around off and on growing up, but we were a Dr. Pepper family dammit! My best buddy Wasson switched me on to the Pibb and a few years later they go and wreck it! Really! Pibb Xtra is just terrible terrible terrible! I still have fond memories of the original and am sad for loss of it from my tastes buds just about every time I'm looking for something to drink at a 7-11 or gas station. I swear the letters X, T, R and A are just mocking me! In an odd move, after the Pibb recipe change it's arch rival Dr. Pepper created Dr. Pepper: Red Fusion that was much closer to the original Mr. Pibb flavor. It is also now unavailable. (The world is mocking me!)

- Nerds Cereal
This is another shared memory of breakfast foods with my brother Dayv and I. I think we only ever got it twice before we couldn't find it anymore. It was totally even divided up into 2 different flavors and 2 different slots to hold the cereal. It was awesome and I'm positive not one bit good for us either. It's hard to understand why my parents would buy us orange and cherry flavored cereal, except to shut us up. That doesn't work as I don't remember even seeing this in the store. So either Dayv did all the begging or my Mom was even cooler than I gave her credit for back then.

- RC Edge
Forget all your posing with Jolt, RC Edge was the soda with the most caffeine allowed in it by law. Did it taste good? Come on, did regular RC Cola ever taste good? So yeah, it was mainly used a caffeine delivery device for me in the early 2000's because of the fact that it was only a quarter for a 12oz can from the machine out in front of the comic shop.

- Pepsi Blue
I'll cop to the fact that I never had this stuff plain. It was the main ingredient in Schwa's "Manhattan Black Out" drink. Maybe toss some whiskey and bitters into any liquid and it becomes ambrosia, but I'll hold steady to the fact that it was a good mixer and therefore had to be tasty and should be missed.

- Mountain Dew : Livewire
The orange variety of Mountain Dew following closely on the heels of Code Red but officially branded as limited edition. After the initial Summer it was released it came back the next Summer but that was the last I saw of it. It had more of an orange cream flavor to it. I'm sure I could mix some Stewart's Orange Creme Soda with some Mountain Dew and get an approximate flavor, but who wants to do all that work.

- Orbitz
It was a soda that had wax candy floating in it! A SODA THAT HAD WAX CANDY FLOATING IN IT! SODA WITH FLOATING CANDY! Basically, it was the greatest thing ever.

- Bonkers
It was a chewy candy that was double layered. The outside layer was of a normal candy consistency, like a Starburst, but the inner layer was super soft, more like a gum. Goodness was it tasty! They had a few different fruit flavors (grape was the best) and chocolate (it was gross). Whenever I think of candy that I miss from my childhood Bonkers are always at the top of my list.

- Diet Cherry Chocolate Dr. Pepper
By far the only diet soda that was ever worth a damn.

And snacks and sodas that I just can't get anymore due to living in LA.

- Kitchen Cooked Potato Chips regular and Louisiana Hot
The original Kitchen Cooked chips were the Potato Chips that I grew up on. The best compliment that I ever heard for them was from my old pal Holoyda from Madison, WI "They taste like fried chicken skin!" OK, granted, he was saying what he thought was wrong with them, but he was wrong, damn wrong, Kitchen Cooked totally rock! A few years before I moved to LA they introduced the Louisiana Hot variety, talk about a new twist on an old favorite. I can't even begin to tell you about the flavor as I didn't have it for long and it's been 3 years, but I'd love to have more.

- Ski Soda
The best thing about this Mountain-Dew-a-like was that it was made with actual lemons and oranges. The second best thing used to be that they kept their 70's designed logo well in to the '90s. I've found out that they changed it well after I was able to find it in the rural areas surrounding St. Louis. I swear a can of Ski was one of the many highlights from my road trip with Randy Toy and Molly Miller to Columbia MO. to see Big Bad Voodoo Daddy. It was so damn good! Other highlights included meeting Tracey Draksler, watching Tracey's VHS of the State, the Chic's Do-It Center and the Elvis Is Alive Museum.

- Cheerwine Soda
A more almondy Dr. Pepper from North Carolina. Based on just being stupid I ordered a case of this to the apartment I shared with Forrest K. I was instantly hooked. I've only had a few stray cans since then that I've found at specialty beverage shops, but any time I see it I just HAVE to go for it.

- Faygo Red Pop
This was MY DRINK in junior high and HS, right next to Cherry Coke. We got Red Pop a lot more often due to Faygo being a really cheap brand along the lines of Shasta. It was kinda like a strawberry soda, but oh so much more complex. If I wanted a strawberry soda I'd grab a Crush, but when I wanted a something else red, sweet and carbonated it was time for Red Pop. More than the flavor I think I was attracted to the fact that it was called "Red Pop" as if it was a flavor. It just sounds so insane and hilarious that I couldn't help but love it!

- Nehi Peach
Peach sodas always taste fantastic and no one does it better than Nehi. Vess really gives them a run for their money, especially when I could get a 3 liter bottle for 99 cents, but Nehi always wins. The other flavors are good, namely the grape, but Nehi will always be peach for me. I don't think I've even had a peach soda in the last 4 years. There's something very very disturbingly wrong with that assessment.

- Candy Corn Jones Soda
OK, this is more of a time issue but every year I patiently wait for Halloween to come around so that I can pick up a 4 pack of this. And I usually go back to the Target for some more. I also save one can for as long as I can hold out. I finally drank my last can from 2008 on my birthday this year. Mmm mmm!

Slacker Central

I know, I've been letting things slide as far as providing content for my blog. The reason is, is that I've been writing it up big time over at my other site, I'm Not Here to Make Friends : a Reality Show Podcast. What awesomely interesting things have I written? Just some trash about Daisy of Love. In the end I'm pretty proud of it I guess. It's certainly the style I've come to write with here in the blog, and about much more frivolous things. It's got the classic chock full of references, lyrics and quotes that have hardly anything to do with anything, but amuse me, as well as the odd drunken ramble that's been known to pop up. So yeah, if you like watching, or just can't tear yourself away from VH1's Daisy of Love, and you like my "style" I guess the worst you could do is waste some time reading my recaps.

Here's some handly links:
Daisy of Love : the Swedish are Gate Crashing (episode 1)
Daisy of Love : Totally Flippin' Out (episode 2)
Daisy of Love : Nothing's Gonna Stop Us Now (episode 3)
Daisy of Love : Grade School Games (episode 4)
Daisy of Love : of Lateness and Skunks (episode 5)
Daisy of Love : Get Over Here! (episode 6)
Daisy of Love : This is the Dawning of a New Era (episode 7)
Daisy of Love : I was Only Playing with You Before but Now... (episode 8)

Of Birthdays and Awesomeness

You may ask yourself "radjose, you're totally 31 now! How'd that happen?" Well, it's easy. Time doesn't stop. It keeps going, and it's been going that long. You may respond "that's a retarded answer! I demand to know what you did for said birthday!" To that I'd respond that I did some awesome things.

First - on the birthday proper I got a sweet custom bowling shirt, you can see me wearing it right there to the left, for my loving girlfriend Allison. What you can't see is the effing rad-tastic back of it. I should photo that and post it, it really is the greatest! But that's not all! Heck no! Allison also to me to Pirate Dinner Adventure! Pirates! Dinner! Adventure! I like all 3 of those things! It was pretty awesome. Even better was that Allison got a whole group of people to surprise me and and meet us there! It was fantastic. I can't even tell you how much it rock I would. Suffice to say, every birthday I have w/o pirates, dinners or adventures just isn't going to rock as hard. After that a bunch of the crew went over to a bar called Cup's for further drinking and pool playing.

Second - the Wednesday after my birthday was pretty awesome as well. It was the usual trivia night, but it was just drunken fun w/ the normal trivia crew. That night was also trivia host Luc's birthday. That guy was crazy fun drunk that night! Hurray!

Third - Friday, the end of my birthday week there was one last party. The flavor tripping party. See, there's this berry, Miracle Fruit, and it changes how your tongue tastes sour and bitter flavors for about an hour. Basically it mutes them, so that you can just eat a lemon and just get all that lemony goodness out of it w/o any of the sourness. It was totally awesome. In the end I could pick what my favorite was, the grapefruit, the kiwi or the rhubarb. Totally awesome! The strawberries, we knew these weren't the best strawberries, but damn if they didn't taste like they were. Licking the salt and vinegar chips was like licking something covered in sugar. Also, my pal Donnie brought some terrible paint thinner tequila that went down so easy while under the influence of the berries. It was just nuts. But it was seriously awesome and I suggest everyone tracking down some of the berries and throwing your own tasting party. I can't get over how awesome it was.

Pretend you were there, visit the photo set.

Also, speaking of birthdays, today is Allison's and I just can't WAIT to give her her gift. It's going to be awesome sweet!

Both Born on May 25th

I'm turning 31 and Jay is handing over the show to Conan at the end of this week. I've always been more of a Conan man myself, but my parents always dug Jay so I've been to a taping and caught enough of it growing up. Basically I just had to get a pic of me and the sign before it was changed, and the 25th of May seemed like the most logical date. Now I need to get some Midori, see it was presented to the world in May 1978, it's this whole birthday thing I have going on right now.

(if you look closely, between the G and the H you can see my buddy Jake VanCleeve. The crazy guy who took the picture backed way up and thus Jake got almost too small to see! Also, the reflection of the sign all around him makes it look like he's floating, that's pretty cool.)

Sober for an hour now, dieing for another.

I feel I should write something as, well, I'm turning 31 tomorrow, and that actually seems like a big step in life. For some reason 30 didn't. Yes, radJose is an old man, fo' realzies. Thing is that there's been a ton of stuff that I've not let you the dear reader of my "blog" in on. I promise to soon expand on these when time permits, or I just stop being lazy. I went to a live "It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia" panel. Saw Jen Sea. I visited Peoria, IL. I've fallen in love w/ the Twitter. (Don't worry Allison, Twitter will never replace you in my heart.) Speaking of Allison I've been rather excited getting her birthday present together. I'm not going to even give a hint of a spoiler, it's going to rad, and everyone's going to be jealous that I'm not their boyfriend. EVERYONE! I've guested on the Drunken Zombie Podcast (the Blood Feast episode. Speaking of podcasts, Allison and I are still doing ours over at I'm Not Here to Make Friends. In addition to yappin' about reality shows I've been writing weekly on Daisy of Love for the site too. It is thankless. I thought about cross posting, but that just seemed TOO self important, even for me. I went and saw No Doubt w/ my pal Nicole. I'm getting stupidly excited for the Scott Pilgrim movie. Also Allison and I continue our "Burgers Through LA" campaign and have pretty much become regulars at a one local establishment. Allison and I also saw a Queen tribute band this weekend.

What does the future hold? Well, proper write ups on the a fore mentioned events, that's for damn sure! And if I don't get around to it, well, hrm, maybe that's all there was to say (other than the Peoria trip that is). More Adventures with Jake, cuz Jake rocks! An explanation for the lack of "Ask radJose" this year. A pirate adventure (no lie!) for my birthday. A flavor tripping party. A week w/o my lady (cue lots of not wearing pants, peeing w/ the door open, and chorizo tacos w/ horchata from Torta's every day for a week) as she's on vacation. A new "Jose Eats Bad Candy" and perhaps a proper write up for that one. And of course the revelation of Allison's super swank-tacular birthday gift, but that one's not coming until well after the 9th of June. I shall hold you ALL in suspense!

Well, I feel I've had my say. Maybe I will put a little something up tomorrow in honor of the big day, we'll see...

That's One for Me, Not for You

I've had a lot of crazy fun stuff on my mind that I've been wanting to share. You know, get back to the old radJose ways and post "crazy" ideas about religion and reality and stuff like that. Or, you know, promote bands or something. But for some reason, I want to talk about what I actually DON'T share that often. For some reason I'm always very reluctant to share the pop culture things that are close to my heart. Why? For fear that if my friends don't like my favorite things, then that'll somehow mean that they don't like me. I know, it's silly, but it's how it goes. I mean, most people know I dig these things, but I don't ever feel the need to get people into it.

MUSIC:
- bis. bis is my favorite band of all time. Usually my friends that hear them on the occasionally mix CD or catch me jamming them in my car either like or don't mind them. Thing is, no matter how much I dig them, and I'm actually very very obsessive over them, I never tell people "hey, you HAVE to hear these guys!" That's not entirely true... I did a bit of that back when they were together, sense the break up in '04 I really haven't. Don't get me wrong, almost every jacket I own has a bis badge on it, but when people ask about it I usually just say "oh they're my favorite band" rather than "they're my favorite band, I HAVE to burn some for you!"

COMICS:
- the Invisibles. Grant Morrison's opus, the thing book that changed how I looked at life, for the better, and yet I can't really suggest it for everyone. It is almost too out there, then again, it seems just so normal to me. Also there's the thing that the average everyday comic fan seemingly HATES Morrison in general, so that makes me even more reluctant to ever try and get people to read it.

MOVIES:
- Brazil. Apparently nobody but me (and Wasson) ever wants to see "1984" with a bunch of Monty Python shit thrown in. That's not true, but I just can't see getting a group together to watch it, hell I tried that with more accessible Time Bandits, and it was nearly disastrous.

THE OTHER THING:
- Twigger's Holiday. While I used to rally for this, and quite loudly and incessantly as well I just can't see myself doing it anymore. Maybe it is all due to showing the wrong people one time, but this will be held in my heart away from all the rest of ya'll.

Am I alone in this? Do you hide things you love out of fear that the people that mean the most to you won't dig the stuff said stuff?

My girlfriend was raised in a Catholic Polish family and is used to this tradition and has told me of it. The catch is, she doesn't really like cake. So I made a brownie and decorated it like a lamb, but mine looked a bit older, so, it's a sheep.

punk rock rhyme!

A whole 2 months? Really? A whole 2 months (plus change) since my last REAL update? Yes, perhaps adventuring with Jake takes up too much time for typing and I should get back to that. To that end, a lot has happened and also, not really too much at all.

First off, I've been riding my bike... a lot. In fact the only transportation I've been taking lately is my bike, the subway and shotgun in Allison's car. The first 2 are due to wanting to save cash and the Earth. The second is due to the nature of tandem parking at our apartment complex. Also, there's secretly a part of me that wants to see how far into this month I can get w/o driving my car. It's April 14th and I feel that that is pretty damn good even if I hop into Joe Rey tomorrow. But more than likely, if it's too far to walk, I'll see if I can utilize the bus for my needs if biking is out of the question and the subway won't help. However, I really don't want to burden Alli with driving us around more, so you know, let's bus it up or keep it local. If we keep local the spending stays down too, I don't think there's an expensive place to eat in walking distance and we've been neglecting them lately anyway! I just might make it the month! Woo!

Also you may've noticed that I didn't stop going on adventures with Jake at the end of March, I just thought "Screw it, I love adventures, and I love Jake! Adventures with Jake shall appear when ever the hell I go on them!" so there's something to look forward to (unless yr Wolfie, who seems to hate both Jake and adventuring).

All in all March was a totally fun month, but before even getting to that I must relate the awesomeness that was the end of February, which includes my little brother Dayv coming out to visit for a week! There's really no words for how awesome this was. I totally love this guy and he hadn't been out here to visit me yet! I hope that I did enough to show him how much living in Los Angeles is fun for me and makes me happy. And even if I didn't, he gets it. It really was a hilariously fun week! All kinds of goof ball stuff went on. The usual highlights of trivia night were there, as well as visits to Laurel Tavern, Amoeba Records, City Walk and a hilariously misinformed hike through Runyon Canyon, that we barely lived to tell the tale of. All in all, good week, and we even ran into John LaJoie on Hollywood Blvd. so really, that's just the coolest! So seriously, Dayv's trip out here was just out and out awesome, here's the evidence.

Later as we entered March Allison's mom came out for a visit as well as her friend, and all around cool chick, Jen came out w/ her boyfriend. Also during this month we saw the ending of one of my favorite reality shows Solitary 3.0 and with that went all the interviews we did for our podcast. What was good about it, is that we were really well received by producer/creators and the contestants from the show. So much so that... well, I'm getting ahead of myself. I was also stoked to finally meed my internet friend Alexis/Skalexis when she visited Los Angeles w/ her awesome fiance David. Jack in the Box featured an awesome racially charged argument, sparked by a possible hobo, that we were witness to (welcome to LA kids!) and a trip to Amoeba. Yes, I'll always take any chance I can get to go to that record store, it is true. With all this win and awesome March also brought some sadness as I had to say good bye to my friend Marshall. While Marshall looked so good with his new hat, I didn't get a picture of that, but I did capture these of the man, the myth, the legend, Marshall, in 3 different flavors: Unflattering, Adored/Lickable, and With A Pretty Lady. Good luck to you my friend, you'll be the best vet that North Carolina has ever seen!

At the tail end of March my buddy Nicole and I got a chance to go see Less Than Jake play a show. It was totally rad. Jumping up and down, skankin', drinkin' & laughin'! This is what it is all about kids, ska/punk IS fun. After the show we ran into Aaron Barrett on the corner, I almost bothered him, but I was afraid his duel skank dates would skeeve me out even more if I got closer too them, no matter how nice he would've been to us. So April hits, and first things first, Allison surprises me with a trip to the Superhero exhibit at the Skirball Center. Which in the end was just a big ball of coolness. Now those days happened back to back and a few short days later Allison and I head out to the Saddle Ranch on Sunset and meet up with contestants from the a fore mentioned Solitary 3.0! It was a really good time, and it was hilarious when the winner was all like, "Hey, guys, I recognized you by your voice!" It was a really fun night meeting some of the contestants that we didn't get a chance to talk to, as well as some past contestants. It was crazy as well and fun and we had a really good time.

Then Allison and I needed some rest, so what else to do but go to Disneyland! It was a hilarious time. Allison got soaked on Splash Mountain when she specifically told the ride not to. We also did "it's a small world" which, is either WAY better in Disney World, or I'm just remembering it better through the haze of... uh... 20 some years. I effing loved it as a kid! But this time, it... it really creeped me out. But none the less it was a fun time and very tiring.

So that's what I've been up to. I've haven't got the chance to welcome my friend Heidi properly to LA yet, but I will soon (shockingly, it'll probably involve a trip to Amoeba). Also there's some fun things in the works for me. I can't let on yet, but totally awesomeness. I'll keep you all abreast of the situations as they develop. I promise not to abandon REAL updates for this long again, seriously, this just about bordered on ridiculous!
